The Christmas season is known for the season of gift giving which makes all the kids and their parents excited. Every year, people think of things they would like to give their loved ones and parents usually think of giving pet dogs as presents to their children. And as expected, their children begin to feel giddy once they see the cute little puppy dogs that their parents had given them for Christmas.

Sadly, sometimes, parents and their children forget that the cute puppies that they got for Christmas are more than just Christmas presents. And it is only a few weeks after Christmas when reality begins to kick in and the task of taking care of these puppies begins to turn into a chore than a hobby. In fact, most of the problems are caused by the dogs like the chewing of furniture, pooping and peeing everywhere, barking all the time and the list just goes on and on.

Then, parents begin to ask themselves why they gave their kids puppies when they are not yet old enough to take care of their own pets. And sadly, what usually happens is that these cute little puppies during Christmas turn out to be pet dogs who are left in the pound feeling unwanted and unloved. The ending to such nice Christmas stories is a sad one not just for the kids who lost their puppies because their too young to take care of their own pets or for the dogs who just lost their chance to have their own family.

If you are seriously considering having a dog, you must be up and about to do all the things not just to keep them alive but to make them feel a part of the family that you have. It is always best to think about getting a dog long and hard. Having pet dogs is a very serious and big decision that people take. It is not something that you decide one minute and decide otherwise a minute after. Having puppies in your home takes serious commitment not just for one but for all the other members of the family.

First, dogs come in so many different breeds and each one has its specific needs that need to be fulfilled. Those that come from the much larger breeds may need more house space, more activities for exercise and an extremely larger amount of food. On the other hand, there are also dogs from a much smaller breed that are sometimes considered as toy dogs because they are usually fun to play with and they can move around so fast. Such smaller dogs can be happily accommodated in small town houses, in flats or in medium-sized apartments.

Second, there are kinds of dogs that require regular visits to the dog groomers just to keep their outer coat in top condition. The others only need occasional brushing of their hair and be showered every other day.

Third, dog training plays a big part in owning dogs. It is a very important that when you decide to have dogs as pets, you need to be able to train them because if you don’t, you will be swarmed with so many dog problems in the future. Christmas comes just once and year but having dogs as pets is a lifetime commitment that is something that you should seriously think about.

Dogs are our best friends. It happens that if we extend our love to the pet dogs, they respond equally and offer you their unconditional love. If you take proper care of your pets, they remain healthy, strong, and also live longer. However, we can do this only when we keep on searching for better things they can have.

Given here are some tips that you can use to take care of your dog.

* Put a soft collar around its neck and put a label on it with the pet’s name, your address, and phone number. This is in case your pet wanders somewhere; someone will bring it back to you.

* Bathing the dog once a month is enough. However, if the dog gets too dirty, clean it with a wet towel or wash its paws. Do not keep it dirty for too long and also do not bathe it frequently because it might develop a skin infection in both the cases.

* Groom it every day. Comb and brush through its hair and make sure that its coat is shining and free from tangles. Do not start grooming with a very tiny pup. Begin when it is about three months old and continue through its life.

* Get it checked up by a veterinary once a month to ensure that it is in proper health. Also make sure that your dog does not have any injuries on its feet and clean its teeth and ears regularly.

* Consult your dog’s veterinarian to fix a proper diet for your loved pet. The diet should be balanced and must include lots of fresh water. Ask the Vet for a list of things that you cannot give your dog to eat.

*Go for a walk with it everyday to ensure that it gets proper exercise and also toilet train it so that it does not defecate anywhere it wants.

* Keep your dog free most part of the day and tie it only when required. You do not want an angry dog that may attack you one day because you kept him tied all the time. But do tie a leash once a while so that your dog gets used to it.

* Get proper vaccination done and get the pet neutered if you do not want to breed it. Consult a veterinary doctor and get the needful done, as and when the doctor tells you. It will ensure that your pet is healthier and happier and lives longer.

* Get a good dog house and make sure that you make your pet go to it only at night to schedule its bed time. Dogs like people around and should be with people throughout the day.

The above-mentioned tips are a few basic things that you can do for your pet. They are not difficult to follow and do not cost too much as well. Apart from giving your dog pet toys and pet food, take care of it as a family member and enjoy your every moment with it.

As your dog ages, you want to make sure that you can keep him in the peak of health. You know that this means monitoring his diet and keeping an eye on how easily he moves and his energy levels, but did you know that you should also take a look at his eyes? Dry eye is essentially a condition where your dog’s tear glands stop working properly and it is something that is fairly common among older dogs. The issue that arises is that when your dog has dry eye, he is going to prone to chronic and painful eye infections. If the irritation gets bad enough, the cornea can become severely scratched and this in turn can lead to ulceration of the wound and blindness.

How can you spot dry eye in your dog? This is a fairly common issue and happily enough, it can be treated fairly quickly. Dry eye will first make itself known through a thick yellowish discharge instead of the clear or cloudy tears that your dog might shed to get rid of debris. The lack of useful tears can mean that bacterial organisms are going to overgrow on the eye and in many cases, you will find that they are around your dog’s eyes might look crusty or dusty. Do you notice that your dog is “wiping” his eyes on his foreleg or have you noticed that his sight seems to be worse? He might even be blundering into doorways that he was once able to navigate quite easily.

If you suspect that your dog might have dry eye, take him to the vet immediately. Your veterinarian will usually proceed by taking a strip of absorbent material and holding it next to your dog’s eye, waiting for the tears to develop. The moisture will travel up the strip of absorbent material and this can be compared with the moisture from the eye of a healthy dog. This treatment can be taken care of very quickly and your dog will only need to have the test performed for a minute.

With good treatment, dry eye can be eliminated permanently. The first step is to take care of any infection that the eye is currently undergoing.

Past infections may have also damaged the tear glands or the nerves, and if your dog is taking any sulfa drugs, they need to be halted. Eye drops or ointment can be applied to treat this condition. Cyclosporine ophthalmic ointment as well as tacrolimus might be used for this purpose. If your dog does not respond to these treatments, artificial tears can be used. In very severe cases, a salivary duct can be transplanted into the eyelid area. Though this procedure is rarely used, it is still another option to consider.

As your dog ages, his needs are going to change, and you will find that you are in a place where you need to look into how you are going to accommodate those changes. Take some time and learn more about how to take care of your dog and what his needs are.
